Who is Lord Ayyappa?

To receive Lord Ayyappa's blessings, the devotees should first observe a 41 day penance. They should also live like a ‘Brahmachari’ and avoid all physical pleasures. On reaching the shrine, they should take a bath in Pampa river and climb the stairs to Ayyappa Sannidhanam.There is no difference between the religion or caste creed of the devotees visiting the shrine. The most important day at the temple is the Makara Sankarakrathi, which is believed to be the day when a fire appears to worship Lord Ayyappa.
